Proof of Space 2.0: what Chia farmers need to know

Chia Network is preparing a new plot format, Proof of Space 2.0 (PoS2). It arrives with Chia 3.0 through a hard fork, and every farmer will have to replot. On 30 April 2026 Chia published a summary of a community Q&A about it. Here are the main points from that summary, earlier Chia posts and the documentation.

New plots

  • Only one plot size: k28, around 1 GB per plot.
  • Plots can be grouped: up to 65,536 plots (around 65 TiB) can act as a single plot.
  • The format is designed to make plot compression uneconomical: Chia's FAQ puts the theoretical saving at only 2–3%.

Timeline

  • The proposed activation block is 9,562,000, about six months after Chia 3.0 is released. Chia's docs (updated 3 March 2026) place it in November 2026. Chia says exact dates will be known once 3.0 is out.
  • From that block, new plots count fully. Old plots gradually lose their chance to win over 256 days, until it reaches zero. The docs expect the last block for old plots (10,741,648) in June or July 2027.
  • New plots do not count before the fork, so replotting early brings no extra rewards.

Hardware

  • Minimum farming hardware becomes a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8 GB of RAM, which Chia says can farm about 2 PiB.
  • Plotting in RAM needs around 12 GB of video memory on a GPU, or at most 16 GB of RAM on a CPU.

Pools

A new pooling protocol comes with PoS2, and pool payouts move from "pay-to-key" to "pay-to-singleton". Chia notes that some pool operators have said they will not support PoS2, so the switch is designed to let farmers freely choose any pool when they move over. Chia also plans a background tool that replots for you while you keep farming your old plots.

What it means for XCHPool farmers

For now, your current plots keep farming as usual at https://pool.xchpool.org. Keep your Chia software up to date: farmers, pools and wallets all need to upgrade to Chia 3.0 before the fork, and then replot during the 256-day window.
